Swimmer Joe's 25 Swim Rules

SwimmerJoe’s 25 Swim Rules

PRIVILEGES. You are entitled to food, clothing, shelter and medical attention. Anything else that you get is a privilege. You earn your privileges by conducting yourself properly. “Good Standing” is a term applied to inmates who have a good conduct record and a good work record and who are not undergoing disciplinary restrictions.

That was rule #5 at the historical Alcatraz Penitentiary in the San Francisco Bay I recently visited.  Wanna read more?

Rules, rules. We have rules all over the place, for traffic control, school, theme parks, on and on. While we resent many rules for their binding us down, others actually help lift us up by allowing us discipline and consistency.

It is for this positive reason that I have developed my own set of rules for my swimmers. I am sure I probably have more rules to come… just haven’t put them to paper yet.

So, swimmers (and parents), follow these rules and we won’t have any problems.

  1. Never miss practice.
  2. Follow rule number 1.
  3. You control your effort.
  4. Work harder than everyone around you.
  5. Don’t give up before the set even starts.
  6. Volunteer for “get out” swims.
  7. Never let somebody tell you that you can’t do something.
  8. Don’t breathe in or out of walls.
  9. Always do 7 Dolphin kicks off the wall.
  10. It’s not the suit; it’s the engine.
  11. Don’t forget your suit or goggles.
  12. Chlorine kills everything.
  13. Listen to your coach.
  14. Eat a good breakfast.
  15. Sleep when the sun is down.
  16. Dream about winning.
  17. Stand like Superman.
  18. Race to win.
  19. Do not be afraid.
  20. Hydrate.
  21. Never miss your swim.
  22. Always warm down after a race.
  23. Truly believe that anything is possible.
  24. Be a role model.
  25. Follow rule number 2.
  26. Live the Pickle Jar.
  27. Swim in the mirror.

When you  memorize these 25 rules, your outlook will become clear as you move forward with your passion!
